KSS Family Awards Night

KSS Family Information and Awards Night – Tuesday October 21/14 – 6:15 – 8:00 PM at the Minis Hall, Super 8 Hotel

All KSS Families (competitive – CG1 / CG2 / CG3/4, Junior Sharks [1/2 hour and 1 hour JRS Programs] and Masters Swimmers) are invited and encouraged to attend. The evening program will include the following: an INTRODUCTION to all KSS Coaches (and the opportunity to meet them and have a brief talk with them should you wish to do so), a “brief” OVERVIEW of the KSS Program, and what we hope/plan to achieve this season, and finally we will be giving out a few AWARDS to recognize a very few “special” achievements from the 2013 – 2014 Swim Season.

And so that our swimmers (many of whom will have just completed a strenuous training session in the pool) don’t die of starvation, we will have pizza, etc. available to keep body and soul together. A cash bar will be available for parents.

The Soggy Log – Wednesday October 8/14

Red vs Black Swim Meet – Saturday October 11/14All KSS members (competitive swimmers, Junior Sharks Swimmers, and Masters Swimmers) are invited to participate in a fun filled Red vs Black Family Fun Meet this coming Saturday AM. Our time lines will look something like this: Warmup – 7:30 – 8:00 AM. All competitive swimmers (CG1 / CG2 / CG3/4) should be on the pool deck ready to begin Warmup by 7:30 AM. Junior Sharks Swimmers are asked to be on the pool deck ready to go in the water by 7:45 AM. A Red vs Black Swim Meet involves just swimmers from the KSS; we have divided our team into two teams (a Red Team and a Black Team) with older KSS swimmers serving as our Team Captains. The object of the whole exercise is for our older swimmers to get to know our newer younger swimmers and vice versa, while introducing our newer members to just what a swim meet may be like. We will be swimming just two Individual Events on Saturday AM – the 100 or 50 or 25 Freestyle (front crawl) and the 100 or 50 or 25 Backstroke events (the distance depends upon each swimmers age and development level) plus a few fun Team Relays. All is meant to be low key, stress-free and FUN!!!!! At 9:30 AM we will be welcoming our Junior Sharks Swimmers into the KSS Team, and presenting them with a KSS T-shirt and swim cap. Then all KSS swimmers and family members are invited to participate in a short Free swim until 10:00 AM. Hopefully everyone can attend.

A Note To All KSS Members

Wednesday September 24, 2014

We are nearing the end of our Fall Session Week #4 (September 22 – 27/14) and I wanted to remind swimmers in CG1 and our Masters groups that we will have AM swimming during Weeks 5, 6 and 7. Our schedule for AM swimming is as follows: CG1 – Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 – 7:30 AM; Masters are welcome to swim from 6:00 – 7:00 AM on the same days. I am looking forward to seeing a whole lot of bright, eager faces in the pool starting on Tuesday AM.

A second item I would like our membership to be aware of is a “Big Push” for NEW Members. I would like all our current members to help us recruit new members, especially during Week #6 (October 6 – 11/14). During this week I would like ALL our current swimmers (competitive / Junior Sharks / Masters) to attempt to bring a “friend” or “friends” to swimming with them. And, I would like these “friends” to commit to attending at least TWICE during the week. This should give them a real idea of just what the Swimming Sharks Program is all about, and hopefully will attract a few new members for the KSS, either now or in the future. Please start recruiting your friends now in preparation for “Bring A Friend Week”. All that your friends will need is a bathing suit (works much better than spray paint) and possibly a swim cap and goggles.

Third, on SATURDAY OCTOBER 11/14 from 7:30 – 10:00 AM we will be running a RED vs BLACK Family Fun Day. All our swimmers plus their “Friends” and Family members are invited to participate. Scheduled activities include timed races over 25, 50 and 100 meters (depends upon the level of ,our swimmers), kicking races, and Fun Relays. Then at 9:30 AM we will be awarding all members of the Junior Sharks Program a new KSS T-shirt and Bathing Cap. Finally we will run a Family Fun Swim with our remaining time. Sound like fun???? I hope to have a very Full pool for this event.

Fourth, for CG1, we will keep our Swim Canada Distance Swimming Program on track by doing Saturday’s scheduled distance swim on Thursday Afternoon.

And finally a reminder for ALL our members – the Kenora Recreation Centre will be closed on Monday October 13/14 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will see you again on Tuesday AM (CG1 and Masters).

Letter from Bruce

I hope everyone is really enjoying their summer. While the weather has been decidedly on the cool side (for summer), it has been just fantastic for my gardens, with tremendous crops of beans, carrots, potatoes, beets, broccoli, cabbage, and the very best garlic crop I have had in years. Our corn is now finally ready and we are enjoying our third lettuce crop of the season. While all of this is nice, we are rapidly approaching the middle of August and – wait for it – the start of a new swimming season and school year. Some of our members have had a very LONG break from regular training; those who swam in the Summer Session not so long. What ever group you fit into, I hope that you are all anxious to get back into the “swim of things” as we will start our 2014 – 2015 Swim Season on Wednesday September 3, 2014.

Before I go any further let me give you a very brief recap of our KSS Summer Session. Our trip to Bismark, ND in mid July was really a lot of fun. All participating swimmers had some really good swims, and for the most part the shopping was excellent, right kids??? Especially the younger girls trip to Victoria Secrets. Then there was a very successful trip to Regina and Moose Jaw, SK by Emilie McDonald (13) and Joe Morrison (13) who competed in the North American Indigenous Games. Both swam very well earning many medals, and having a really positive experience. Finally, Keely Mash (16), Winnie Boucha (14), Natalie Peterson (12), Bryce Jones (16) and Gabe Mastromatteo (12) represented the KSS at the Canadian Age Group Championships in Winnipeg in late July. All swam very well with many Personal Best Times; special mention must be made of the following swims:

Natalie Peterson – Silver Medal – 50 Back – 32.13; Silver Medal – 100 Back – 1:08.52; Bronze Medal – 200 Back – 2:26.41; and Gabe Mastromatteo – Bronze Medal – 100 Breast – 1:11.46; and Silver Medal – 200 Breast – 2:32.23 – a NEW Canadian Record for Boys 11 + 12. Great job kids!!!!!!

Looking forward to 2014 – 2015 the Swim Canada Program and competition schedule has been changed quite dramatically, which will have quite an impact on our KSS competitive schedule. As a result Edie and I have made the following changes to our KSS scheduling: 1) We will employ a much reduced AM training schedule for swimmers in CG1. During each of our three Sessions (Fall / Winter / Spring-Summer) we will only swim in the AM’s during specified weeks, as we will attempt to overload our swimmers during these weeks then have weeks for rest and adaptation to occur. This should let our swimmers enjoy their very best results ever, while keeping the number of weeks with AM training to a minimum. 2) We have looked at broadening the scope of our CG1 competitive program so we can include more swimmers into this part of our program. CG1 membership will be based upon ability, willingness to train or to work hard during practice, and age (compatible social peer group). Our CG2 group will remain for our best young swimmers, and our combined CG3/4 will be for our youngest entry level competitive swimmers. These changes should enable us to find a compatible place within our program for all swimmers who wish to be KSS members.

Now I would suggest that

ALL our members start to get active again. Your “HOLIDAY” from exercise is officially over. Walk, run. bike, row, stretch, whatever, get off the couch and start to rediscover just how great exercise can make you feel. Our first day of swimming will be Wednesday September 3/14 - 4:00 – 5:15 PM for ALL competitive swimmers. Then starting on Thursday September 4/14 we will be starting our annual Junior Sharks Trial Program. We will need lots of help from swimmers in CG1 and CG2 ( we can sign for up to three Volunteer hours for your help). We also really NEED your HELP to recruit new members for the KSS. This is your Team; it is much more fun when your friends are also KSS members. You can really help us by recruiting new swimmers and/or old swimmers (those that maybe did not swim for the past little while). Give it a shot. It would really be great if you could help us!!!!

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

BF
